Stop the parts-truck callback before Monday morning.
Your tech rolls up on a same-day appliance callback — a 7-year-old Whirlpool dishwasher standing in water at the 42-min mark, a 4-year-old Samsung over-the-range that won’t accept key input after a firmware flash, a side-by-side short-cycling its compressor, a gas dryer throwing an open-circuit on the element. The assistant reads the model and control-board rev, runs the bench script, and returns the ranked cause — sump flapper, ribbon cable, start relay, thermal fuse — before the tech unloads the truck.
> ERROR CODE .......... UE / dE > DRAIN PUMP Ω ....... 28.4 / 14.0 (HI) > PRESSURE SWITCH .... OPEN @ 14s > CYCLE POSITION ....... ABORT @ SPIN > FAULT ................ DRAIN TRAIN
Indicative readout · illustration only · not a real ticket.
From the bench
The four calls we’re getting this week.
Anonymised cases from the bench tape. Numbers and operators illustrated; copy lifts typical appliance faults so you can picture where the diagnostic lands on your own tickets.

Symptom: Dishwasher no-drain mid-cycle, standing water at 42-min mark.
> DRAIN PUMP Ω ....... 38.2 / 14.0 (HI) > CHECK VALVE Ω ..... OPEN @ REST > SUMP WATER LEVEL .. 4.2 in (HI) > CYCLE POSITION ..... ABORT @ 42min
Ranked causes
- 01DRAIN PUMP IMPELLER FOULED52%
- 02SUMP CHECK-VALVE FLAPPER33%
- 03SUMP GASKET LIFT15%
Bench move: pull the sump and inspect the check-valve flapper before replacing the pump. A stuck flapper reads high drain-pump Ω and leaves standing water at 42 min on a fresh pump — replace the flapper and reseat the sump gasket, then re-run the leak-only cycle.
- SHOP BANONYMISED · ILLUSTRATIVE
Symptom: Microwave dead keypad after a firmware flash on an over-the-range.
> HMI Ω ............ 4.6 / OPEN (LOW) > RIBBON Ω ......... 0.0 / OPEN > MEMBRANE Ω ....... 12.4 / 4.0 (HI) > KEY ACK .......... TIMEOUT
Ranked causes
- 01MEMBRANE TAIL-LIFT57%
- 02RIBBON CABLE OPEN28%
- 03CONTROL-BOARD EEPROM15%
Bench move: reseat the ribbon cable at the HMI connector before condemning the control board. A membrane tail-lift reads open-circuit on every key and tells the EEPROM the firmware-flash failed — clean the contacts with isopropyl and reflow the connector before shipping a board.
- SHOP CANONYMISED · ILLUSTRATIVE
Symptom: Refrigerator short-cycling compressor on a side-by-side.
> COMPRESSOR RUN ... 4m / 14m (HI) > START RELAY Ω .... OPEN > EVAP COIL ......... BACK FROST > PTC DEVICE ........ PITTING
Ranked causes
- 01START RELAY / PTC PITTING61%
- 02BACK-EVAP COIL FROST24%
- 03HERMETIC SEIZED15%
Bench move: read compressor run-time in 10-minute windows and tap-test the start relay for pitting. A short-cycling hermetic with a pitted PTC will re-start cleanly cold and seize again under load — replace the relay first, only condemn the hermetic after two restart cycles.
- SHOP DANONYMISED · ILLUSTRATIVE
Symptom: Dryer no-heat — open-circuit reading on a gas unit.
> ELEMENT Ω (COLD) INFINITE > THERMAL FUSE ..... 0.0 / OPEN > HI-LIMIT STAT ..... 0.0 / OPEN > CYCLING STAT ...... 0.0 / OPEN
Ranked causes
- 01THERMAL FUSE OPEN52%
- 02HI-LIMIT STAT OPEN28%
- 03ELEMENT OPEN-CIRCUIT20%
Bench move: trace the load path under power, not just cold ohms. The thermal fuse, hi-limit, cycling stat, and element read in series — a fuse blown from a restricted vent pushes the wrong parts list if you spec the element cold.
How SecondShift fits
It lives where your appliance dispatch already is.
The diagnostic assistant surfaces inside the FSM your trucks already run on. No new app to open, no new login for the tech — same ticket, same notes panel, with the bench tape injected in the right place per vendor.
- ServiceTitanSURFACES HERE
Inside the Job Notes panel on the dispatch card
Runs as a side panel below the tech’s voice note. Ranked causes and the bench verdict land inline with the customer-history block so the dispatcher sees the model/control-board rev and the sensor Ω reading alongside the call notes.
- Housecall ProSURFACES HERE
On the custom fields of the dispatch card
Three custom fields get populated per ticket: error code → ranked cause #1, part list with control-board rev, bench verdict. The tech never opens another window on a drain-train callback.
- JobberSURFACES HERE
In the visit-notes tile on the job detail view
Pins as the bottom tile on the job — above the customer’s signature line and below the photos so the dispatcher sees the short-cycle window and the start-relay tap-test result first thing Monday morning.
- FieldEdgeSURFACES HERE
On the work-order form, just below the symptom dropdown
Renders the ranked causes under the existing service-type selector. The tech’s existing checklist stays exactly where it is; the error-code lookup step lands inside the existing appliance-type row.
- Dynamics 365 Field ServiceSURFACES HERE
On the booking timeline, as a custom control activity
Attaches to the work order as a custom control activity so the existing Power Automate rules can route it onward without rebuilding dispatch logic.
Book the $997 appliance setup.
One day with the bench on Monday morning. Tool-tape config built against your first ten appliance tickets — dishwasher, dryer, refrigerator, microwave — and the FSM seam where your dispatchers read it. $997 books the bench, the form is pre-tagged with vertical=appliance+repair, and an owner reads the intake within one business day. Pick the primary window now or move to a later one — both leave the brief in front of the bench.
Pick the FSM your trucks run on. Send the setup brief.
Four fields, an owner reads every one. Tool-tape + bench-verdict config for the appliance line starts the day we agree to scope — booked as a single $997 setup engagement, vertical=appliance repair pre-tagged on the intake.
// Pre-tag the setup brief
Pick the dispatch platform your trucks already run on, then send the setup brief. The intake lands on the desk already pre-tagged with vertical=appliance repair and your FSM — no replay needed.
